The Institute of Energy Technology is a unit under Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) (formerly the Institute of Thermal and Refrigeration Science and Technology). The Institute was established on October 10, 2000, under Decision No. 4166/QĐ-BGD&ĐT-TCCB issued by the Minister of Education and Training. According to Resolution No. 08/NQ-ĐHBK of the HUST Council, from February 15, 2024, the Institute of Thermal and Refrigeration Science and Technology was officially renamed the Institute of Energy Technology. The Institute is a Science and Technology organization operating under the Certificate of Registration for Science and Technology Activities No. A-180, issued by the Minister of Science and Technology.
Following the historical development of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the discipline of Thermal Energy and Refrigeration Engineering originated in October 1960 with the establishment of the Thermal Power Department under the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, initially consisting of six staff members and three single-story buildings (Building Block 18). By the year 2000, the Institute of Thermal and Refrigeration Science and Technology was formally established. Over nearly 25 years of formation and development, the Institute has trained thousands of engineers, master’s degree holders, and doctoral graduates in Thermal–Refrigeration Engineering and Energy Technology. Alumni of the Institute have served and continue to serve across the country, many of whom hold key leadership positions in government agencies as well as professional management roles in corporations, state-owned enterprises, and businesses.
In the field of science and technology, the Institute has led, implemented, and transferred more than 1,000 science and technology projects to domestic and international organizations. Notable examples include the design and technology transfer of beer, wine, alcohol, and beverage production plants nationwide; waste treatment furnace systems; and agricultural, forestry, and aquatic product processing systems. Professional consulting contributions from the Institute’s lecturers and experts have saved the State hundreds of millions of USD, notably through consultancy for major thermal power plants such as Pha Lai and Uong Bi.
Since 2021, with strengthened collaboration and support from leading experts in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive and Power Engineering, and related fields, the Institute of Energy Technology has developed a team of over 60 professors, doctors, and leading experts working in areas including Energy, New Energy, Materials Technology, Information Technology, Automation, Mechanical Engineering, and Transportation Technology. This team supports the Institute’s strategic directions in applied research, technological innovation, technology transfer, education, and human resource development in service of national development.
With the vision of becoming a leading research, application development, and technology transfer institution in Vietnam and the region in the fields of energy technology and energy transition, the Institute aims to contribute to green and sustainable socio-economic development, and to serve as a trusted destination for investment and cooperation for domestic and international industrial and investment partners.
